UCF Men's Soccer Shoot

UCF men's soccer team takes the (5-1) W against FGCU while your girl takes the L....

Hey guys,

Tonight was my first time getting an assignment outside my Principles of Journalism class and it did not go as planned.

I was beyond excited when the sports editor texted me if I was free tonight to shoot the men's soccer game, but what I did not know was the stress that awaited.

Upon my arrival, I introduced myself to the sports director & the reporter I reached out to for information earlier that day. Then, I sat down next to the women's soccer team and began asking them questions about how their season was going and if they were close to the guys on the men's team- they said their relationship was, "nothing out of the ordinary".

The game begins.

25 seconds into the match, UCF Cal Jennings scored his 15th goal of the season, and I was still midfield giving myself a pep talk about my strategy for the night.

As I made my way to FGCU's net, I began to take pictures of the players as they finessed the Eagles with their agility and speed. Things are going well, I am getting some decent shots, and then... my camera stops working.

10 PICTURES IN, the words "FULL" popped up on the screen. Great.

I'm fine, I'm fine, everything's fine...

Scared something was going to happen, I packed a portable charger (thank god) in case I had to resort to my glamorous iPhone 5 which, at the moment, was currently on 13%.

I was #stressin throughout the whole game, but tried my best to come up with something decent...

This is what I mustered together...

For what it is worth, I think that my editing compensated for the shitty iPhone quality and the pictures turned out much better than I thought they would turn out given the circumstances.

This was definitely a learning experience that I will grow from. Everyone needs a "first assignment" and practice makes perfect! Despite my love for soccer, shooting it is a totally ball game.

All in all, I am eager to continue to learn and grow as a journalist through experiences like these, preferably less stressful ones.

If you have any feedback, please leave me a comment or email me :)

Warmly,
Sofia Julien

I've been wanting to focus on starting my career and gaining experience for the longest time now, but I didn't really know how or where to start.

Then, this Eureka moment occurred while I listened to Natalie Zfat tonight as she starting talking about how one can use social media to land your dream job and, well, this is the result. Welcome to my blog:)

Now, primarily this blog is going to be used to document moments of curiosity, assignments, and jobs that are associated with pursuing a journalism career.

Ideally,  I will be able to revisit and analyze various pieces with the progression of time, as well as, apply and obtain criticism from others.

The following will only make me a better journalist and will showcase my expertise in the art of storytelling when I have learned it all.

To be able to show such progression is a beautiful thing, and I am excited to take you all on this journey with me.
